![]() ![]() Such immersion can result in increased embodiment, which has been shown to improve motor-related processes ( Juliano et al., 2020), making HMD–VR especially applicable in the realm of physical rehabilitation.Īlthough HMD–VR emerged only recently, research on its use in rehabilitation is growing rapidly. Compared with VR on a traditional computer screen or tablet, HMD–VR provides an enhanced sense of immersion in the virtual world ( Juliano et al., 2020). Moreover, because users consider the virtual tasks more interesting and enjoyable, the use of VR encourages greater participation and higher levels of engagement in therapy ( Laver et al., 2017). In general, VR, whether on a screen or via HMD–VR, can enable simulated practice of functional tasks at higher dosages than in traditional therapies ( Laver et al., 2017). HMD–VR is an ideal medium for assessment and intervention in physical rehabilitation because it can be tailored to the needs of the patient, can provide personalized feedback on performance, and can allow intervention to take place in a safe and nonthreatening yet realistic environment ( Henderson et al., 2007). Since then, HMD–VR has advanced such that, starting with the release of the Oculus Rift (Oculus VR, Menlo Park, CA) in 2015, the devices are lightweight, portable, and affordable, providing opportunities in a variety of realms, including medicine and rehabilitation ( Rizzo et al., 1997). Sutherland’s initial technology was complex, costly, and so physically massive that it had to be suspended from the ceiling ( Sherman & Craig, 2002). Whereas primitive VR appeared in the late 1800s as stereoscopic photo viewers that added depth to two-dimensional images, the first fully immersive head-mounted display for virtual reality (HMD–VR) was developed by computer scientist Ivan Sutherland in 1968 ( Sherman & Craig, 2002). Virtual reality (VR) refers to “a range of computing technologies that present artificially generated sensory information in a form that people perceive as similar to real-world objects or events” ( Wilson et al., 1997, p. Objective: To explore how HMD–VR has been used in adult physical rehabilitation.ĭata Sources: A systematic search of MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and ERIC produced 11,453 abstracts, of which 777 underwent full-text review. Importance: Head-mounted displays for virtual reality (HMD–VR) may be used as a therapeutic medium in physical rehabilitation because of their ability to immerse patients in safe, controlled, and engaging virtual worlds. ![]() ![]() ![]() Windowsden.uk is not directly affiliated with Nordcurrent UAB, the developers of Happy Clinic: Hospital Game. Most dive as far down as the twilight zone, where the dim light from above rapidly dwindles to nothing. Most visit the twilight zone, but many dive farther. “The fact we can’t rule out any of them reflects how mysterious a lot of these large pelagic animals are to us.”Īlmost every group of ocean-going vertebrate includes some species adapted for diving deep. “All these ideas are in play,” says Thorrold. ![]() Deep, dimly lit waters could provide refuge from other predators somewhere to cool an overheating body navigational cues for those able to detect them even a long-distance communication channel. There is no shortage of suggestions for what those purposes might be. “If the same individual does different types of dive at different times,” says Thorrold, “then that’s good evidence they are for different purposes.” A quick downward plunge and equally steep ascent, for instance, suggests a different purpose from a long, slow, flat-bottomed dive. The shapes of dives hint at more than one function, too. Most stick to depths between 200 and 1,000 meters, a region officially named the mesopelagic but better known as the twilight zone others plunge far deeper. Dives and diving behavior vary: Some animals dive many times an hour, others sporadically. The northern elephant seal ( Mirounga angustirostris) is now something of a superstar, thanks to a pioneering series of mini-movies featuring its own snout and whiskers and a supporting cast of deep-sea fish and squid.įood, though, might not be the deep sea’s only attraction, says Thorrold, coauthor of an article that examines the motivation of diving predators in the 2022 Annual Review of Marine Science. But even now, only one species has been seen in action. After decades of tagging studies, there’s enough circumstantial evidence to be confident that many top predators do dive deep in search of prey. Yet that’s been remarkably hard to prove. But what drove these great predators to acquire their remarkable diving skills?įor most biologists, the answer is a no-brainer: Food. To function at such depths, deep-diving species have evolved an array of anatomical and physiological adaptations - thick, insulating blubber, for instance, or blood vessels transformed into heat-exchange systems, collapsible lungs and oxygen-storing muscles, and ultra-sensitive eyes, to name but a few. Many regularly plunge hundreds and sometimes thousands of meters - to depths where the water can be dangerously cold and short of oxygen, there’s little or no light except for the flickers and flashes of bioluminescent organisms, and the pressure is immense, putting some animals at risk of fatal decompression sickness. ![]() ![]() They have revealed remarkable journeys across entire oceans, and they have shown that diving deep is pretty much ubiquitous among large marine predators of all kinds. But all in all, I feel like this speaker is more defined by its features than sound quality, which is a bit interesting. It does sound quite good in its own right - very articulate and clear, with decent low end. So, does the BOOM 2 sound better than the original BOOM? Yes. This speaker is more defined by its features than sound quality. If you have a MB and haven't updated it yet, you probably should. Oh, the newest update pushed out by UE - the one that brought Block Party mode - also brings these intuitive gesture controls to MEGABOOM. It's brilliantly simplistic, and I love it. These gestures are stupid-simple to use, too: pick up the speaker (yeah, it has to be in your hand before this will work) and tap the top to pause the music. Instead of cluttering the BOOM 2's simplistic design with more buttons, however, UE went another direction to add this feature to the speaker: gestures. While I get that not everyone cares about this, I always prefer the option of being able to control the music from my phone and the speaker - it just makes sense to me. My biggest complaint about the BOOM speakers has historically been the lack of track controls. UE didn't keep everything the same, however it also had a few tricks up its sleeve for the BOOM 2. This raised the bar even higher for the BOOM 2 - not only does it have to improve on its predecessor, but it also has to compete with the Flip 3, which costs half as much, and Charge 2+, which is still $70 cheaper than the BOOM 2 (and an incredible speaker).Unfortunately, every king gets dethroned eventually. ![]() I recently reviewed the Xtreme and Flip 3, both of which blew my mind in a way that I haven't experienced since the original BOOM.
